A potentially interesting blend of mysticism and suspense doesn’t quite gel in this first novel. Helena and Miles Proby are a thirtysomething New Orleans yuppie couple whose flagging marriage is revived by their involvement in the “Krewe,” a Mardi Gras social club whose members turn out to be as sinister as Rosemary’s neighbors and those Stepford folks. Unfortunately, the author’s repeated hammering home of his didactic moral message — self-pity, blaming others, and complacency will make you a spiritual victim — mars the pacing necessary for a taut thriller, and Dalby disconcertingly mixes screenplay-like dialog and stage direction with his prose.
